Description of the activity

The Engineering Geology Laboratory of the Earth Sciences Department of the University of Florence, carries out geotechnical testing of soil samples, tests for the classification and geomechanical characterization of rock masses and rock discontinuities, geotechnical tests on aggregates and in situ testing of soils and rocks. In situ tests are performed for the determination of the parameters and indexes of the chemical-physical characteristics as well as tests for the determination of the mechanical properties even in conditions of partial saturation. To determine the shear strength parameters of soils and / or soils in natural conditions of saturation in the site cutting tests on site through the use of BST (Borehole shear test) is used. 

The development of appropriate procedures for processing the data collected through laser scanner surveys, is used to identify and characterize discontinuity systems and unstable blocks in a semi-automated procedure in areas of dangerous and not easy accessibility (e.g.: cliffs).

N. 1 point load testing machine for in situ (on-site Point Load Index Test)

N. 2 blenders for the determination of particle size with aerometer, hydrometer and thermostatic bath

N. 6 ovens for drying samples at 105° C
