The Department of Earth Sciences (DST) of Florence is the proposing body of the "PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences".
The Academic Board, is composed of professors and researchers from the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Florence, specialists from research institutions and professors from foreign universities, thus contributing to meeting the criterion of International Innovative Doctorates.
The "PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences" aims to offer young MSc graduates the opportunity to follow a third-level and international training course, networking the best skills of the University of Florence, together with those of some of the main Research Institutions dealing with Earth Sciences in Italy (the Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources and the Institute for Electromagnetic Sensing of the Environment of the CNR, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, ). In addition, subjects from the world of work are partners in the project, making it possible to develop a solid link in the field of higher education between the world of research, work and professions.
The advanced training project of the PhD program covers the wide spectrum of Earth Sciences by organizing itself into different lines of research; here the student can find the most appropriate topics to define the personalized training path. Among these research areas we can find topics of "tectonic-sedimentary evolution in areas of continental convergence and divergence", "soil protection and conservation, environmental vulnerability and hydrogeological protection", "paleontology, paleoclimatology and paleoecology", "minerogenesis, crystalchemistry, petrology, geochemistry and isotopic geology", "georesources and mineralogical-petrographic applications for cultural heritage", "magmatology and volcanology", "geophysics for the exploration of the subsoil and the characterization of geological processes", "observation of space". Many of these areas of research historically represent an excellence for the University of Florence.
The students of the PhD Course in Earth and Planetary Sciences come from Italian and foreign universities. For three years they will work within research facilities and companies that deal with Earth and Planetary Sciences; the PhD students must carry out a period of a few months in foreign research facilities, helped by the numerous international agreements that have been signed between the Departments and foreign universities. In addition, through possible international co-tutorship agreements stipulated by the University of Florence with a foreign university, the doctoral thesis is carried out under the supervision of a professor from each of the two institutions and leads to obtaining a degree issued by both partner
universities.
The "PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences" is part of the Istituto degli Studi Superiori dell’Ateneo Fiorentino (IUSSAF) (https://www.unifi.it/a58.html)
